Dab Rigs & Concentrates: How to Dab Cannabis

Dabbing is the process of vaporizing cannabis concentrates on a heated surface and inhaling the resulting vapor. It delivers potent effects almost instantly, making it popular among experienced cannabis consumers who want intense flavor and strong effects. While dabbing has a steeper learning curve than smoking flower or eating an edible, understanding the basics of equipment, concentrate types, and temperature control will help you dab safely and enjoyably.

What Is Dabbing?

At its core, dabbing is simple: you heat a surface (called a nail or banger), apply a small amount of cannabis concentrate to it, and inhale the vapor through a water-filtered rig. The high temperature instantly vaporizes the concentrate, releasing cannabinoids and terpenes without the combustion byproducts associated with smoking flower.

Concentrates used for dabbing typically contain 60–90% THC, compared to 15–30% for flower. This means a single dab delivers significantly more THC per hit than a bowl of flower. For this reason, dabbing is generally recommended for consumers who have built up some tolerance and are looking for a more potent experience.

Types of Cannabis Concentrates

The world of concentrates can be confusing, with dozens of textures, names, and extraction methods. Here are the most common types you will find at dispensaries, organized by texture and production method.

  • Shatter: A glass-like, translucent concentrate that snaps when broken. Shatter is made via hydrocarbon extraction (butane or propane) and is known for its stability and high purity. It is easy to handle and portion, making it a great starting point for new dabbers.
  • Wax: A soft, opaque concentrate with a waxy, crumbly texture. Wax is created by whipping the extract during the purging process. It is easy to scoop and apply to a nail but degrades faster than shatter when exposed to air and heat.
  • Budder / Badder: A creamy, butter-like concentrate that is smooth and easy to work with. Budder retains more terpenes than shatter because of its whipped consistency, often delivering richer flavor at the cost of slightly lower THC percentages.
  • Live Resin: Made from fresh-frozen cannabis (not dried and cured), live resin preserves the full terpene profile of the living plant. It has a saucy, crystalline texture and is prized for its exceptional flavor and aroma. Live resin is typically more expensive than shatter or wax.
  • Rosin: A solventless concentrate made by applying heat and pressure to flower or hash. Because no solvents are used, rosin is considered one of the cleanest concentrates. Quality rosin rivals live resin in flavor and can be made at home with a rosin press.
  • Diamonds (THCA Crystals): Large, crystalline structures of nearly pure THCA that can test above 99% potency. Diamonds are often sold suspended in terpene-rich sauce for flavor. They deliver the most potent dab experience available.
  • Sauce: A liquid-heavy concentrate consisting of THCA crystals swimming in a terpene-rich liquid. Sauce offers an excellent balance of potency and flavor and is one of the most popular concentrate formats for experienced dabbers.

Dab Rig Setup: What You Need

A basic dab setup requires a few essential pieces of equipment. While the initial investment is higher than buying a pipe or rolling papers, a quality rig will last for years with proper care.

  1. Dab rig: A water pipe specifically designed for concentrates. Rigs are typically smaller than bongs because concentrate vapor does not need as much filtration. Look for a rig with a 14mm or 10mm joint.
  2. Banger / nail: The heated surface where you apply your concentrate. Quartz bangers are the most popular choice because they heat evenly, preserve flavor, and are easy to clean. Titanium nails heat faster but can affect taste.
  3. Carb cap: A lid placed over the banger after dropping in your concentrate. Carb caps restrict airflow and lower the pressure inside the banger, allowing concentrates to vaporize at lower temperatures for better flavor.
  4. Dab tool: A small metal or glass wand used to scoop and apply concentrate to the heated banger. Different tip shapes work better with different concentrate textures.
  5. Torch: A butane torch used to heat the banger. Kitchen torches work but dedicated dab torches provide more consistent heat and last longer.
  6. Timer or thermometer: Optional but highly recommended. An infrared thermometer or terpometer helps you hit the ideal temperature for each dab.

Temperature Guide for Dabbing

Temperature is the single most important variable in dabbing. Too hot and you destroy terpenes and produce harsh, throat-burning vapor. Too cold and the concentrate will not fully vaporize, leaving a puddle of wasted material in your banger. Finding the sweet spot unlocks the best flavor and smoothest experience.

  • Low-temp dabs (315–450°F / 157–232°C): Maximum flavor, smoothest vapor, least harsh on the throat. Terpenes are fully preserved at these temperatures. The trade-off is that some concentrate may not fully vaporize, leaving residue in the banger.
  • Medium-temp dabs (450–600°F / 232–315°C): The sweet spot for most dabbers. Good balance of flavor and vapor production, with most of the concentrate fully vaporizing. This is where most beginners should start.
  • High-temp dabs (600–900°F / 315–482°C): Maximum vapor production and intensity, but terpenes are largely destroyed. High-temp dabs taste harsher and can irritate the throat and lungs. Generally not recommended unless you prioritize potency over flavor.
Beginner Tip: Cold-Start Dabbing
The cold-start dab (also called a reverse dab) is the easiest method for beginners. Place your concentrate in the banger before heating, then slowly apply heat with the torch until the concentrate begins to bubble and vaporize. This method automatically prevents overheating and preserves maximum flavor.

E-Nails and Electronic Rigs

Electronic nails (e-nails) and electronic rigs (e-rigs) eliminate the need for a torch by using electric heating elements with precise temperature control. They are a significant upgrade in convenience and consistency, though they come at a higher price point.

  • E-nails: A coil that wraps around a standard quartz or titanium banger and connects to a digital controller box. You set the exact temperature and the coil maintains it indefinitely. E-nails are ideal for home use and offer the most precise temperature control.
  • E-rigs (Puffco Peak, Dr. Dabber, etc.): All-in-one electronic dab rigs with built-in heating chambers, water filtration, and rechargeable batteries. They are portable, easy to use, and require no torch. E-rigs are the most beginner-friendly way to dab.
  • Nectar collectors: Handheld, straw-like devices that you dip directly into concentrate. Electric nectar collectors heat the tip automatically. They are simple and portable but offer less filtration than a full rig.

Dabbing Safety Tips

Dabbing is safe when done properly, but the high potency and use of a torch require some extra precautions that do not apply to other consumption methods.

  1. Start with a small dab: A dose the size of a grain of rice is plenty for beginners. You can always take another dab, but you cannot undo a dab that was too large.
  2. Use a stable surface: Set up your rig on a flat, heat-resistant surface. A silicone mat protects your table and prevents the rig from sliding.
  3. Never touch the hot banger: Quartz bangers can reach 700°F+ and retain heat for minutes after torching. Always allow the banger to cool completely before handling.
  4. Keep your torch upright: Store butane torches upright and away from the rig when not in use. Never point a lit torch at anything other than the banger.
  5. Clean your banger after every dab: Use a cotton swab to wipe out residual concentrate while the banger is still warm. This prevents buildup that affects flavor and can crack the quartz over time.
  6. Stay hydrated: Dabbing can cause dry mouth and throat irritation. Keep water nearby.
