Cannabis Concentrates Guide

Cannabis concentrates are products made by extracting the most desirable compounds — cannabinoids and terpenes — from the plant. They offer higher potency (60–99% THC) and cleaner flavors than traditional flower.

What Are Concentrates?

Concentrates are created by separating trichomes (the resin glands on cannabis flower) from plant material. The result is a potent product that delivers stronger effects with less material. A single dab of concentrate can equal several hits of flower.

Potency Warning
Concentrates are 2–5x stronger than flower. If you're new to cannabis, start with flower or low-dose edibles first.

Types of Concentrates

Here are the most common concentrate types you'll find at dispensaries:

  • Shatter: Hard, glass-like texture. Breaks into pieces. 70–85% THC. Clean, smooth hits.
  • Wax / Budder: Soft, opaque texture. Easy to handle with a dab tool. 70–90% THC.
  • Live Resin: Made from flash-frozen fresh plants. Preserves maximum terpenes for the best flavor. 65–85% THC.
  • Rosin: Solventless — made with heat and pressure only. Favored by purity-conscious consumers. 60–80% THC.
  • Diamonds: Crystalline THCA with terpene sauce. Highest potency, often 95%+ THC.
  • Distillate: Refined, odorless oil. Used in vape cartridges and edibles. 85–95% THC.
  • Hash / Bubble Hash: Traditional method using ice water. Full-spectrum flavor. 40–70% THC.

How to Consume Concentrates

  1. Dabbing: Heat a nail or banger with a torch, apply concentrate, inhale. Most popular method for experienced users.
  2. Vape pens: Load concentrate into a compatible vaporizer or buy pre-filled cartridges. Easiest entry point.
  3. Topping flower: Add a small amount of concentrate on top of a bowl or joint for extra potency.
  4. E-rigs: Electronic dab rigs with precise temperature control. No torch needed.

Safety Tips

  • Start extremely small: A rice-grain-sized dab is plenty for beginners.
  • Low-temp dabs: 315–450°F preserves terpenes and reduces harshness. High temps burn off flavor.
  • Buy from licensed dispensaries: Black-market concentrates may contain harmful solvents or additives.
  • Stay hydrated and have a comfortable space ready.
  • Don't mix with alcohol — the combination intensifies effects unpredictably.
  • Store properly: Keep in airtight silicone or glass containers away from heat and light.
