How to Store Cannabis Properly

Proper storage preserves your cannabis's potency, flavor, and safety. Exposure to light, air, heat, and moisture degrades cannabinoids and terpenes — and can lead to mold. Here's how to keep your stash fresh.

Ideal Storage Conditions

Think of cannabis like fine wine — environment matters:

  • Temperature: 60–70°F (15–21°C). Heat degrades cannabinoids; cold can make trichomes brittle.
  • Humidity: 55–62% relative humidity. Use Boveda or Integra Boost packs to maintain the sweet spot.
  • Light: UV light is the #1 enemy of THC. Store in a dark place or use opaque containers.
  • Air: Minimize oxygen exposure. Fill containers as full as possible to reduce air volume.
Shelf Life
Cannabis stored in ideal conditions can maintain potency for 6–12 months. Poorly stored cannabis degrades noticeably within weeks.

Best Containers for Cannabis

  • Glass mason jars: The gold standard. Airtight, non-reactive, and affordable. Use dark or opaque jars for extra light protection.
  • UV-blocking glass jars: Premium option (like Infinity Jars). Blocks damaging light wavelengths.
  • Vacuum-sealed containers: Remove air for long-term storage. Great for bulk purchases.
  • Titanium or stainless steel: Durable and light-proof, but can affect taste if not lined.

What to Avoid

  • Plastic bags: Create static that pulls trichomes off buds. Not airtight.
  • Plastic containers: Can leach chemicals and build static. Use only short-term.
  • Fridges and freezers: Temperature fluctuations cause moisture issues. Freezing makes trichomes snap off.
  • Near electronics: Heat from appliances degrades your cannabis.

Common Storage Mistakes

  1. Leaving it in the dispensary bag: Those exit bags are not designed for storage. Transfer to a jar immediately.
  2. Storing near the stove or window: Heat and light are the two biggest degradation factors.
  3. Grinding too early: Ground cannabis loses potency much faster. Grind only what you'll use that session.
  4. Mixing strains in one jar: Flavors and aromas blend. Keep strains separate to preserve unique profiles.
  5. Ignoring humidity: Too dry = harsh smoke; too moist = mold risk. Use humidity packs.
  6. Forgetting to label: Write the strain name, date purchased, and THC% on each container.
